Following our initial visit to Tailwaters Lodge situated on the banks of the South Holston River in Bristol, Tennessee, we decided to plan a return trip with a few of our fishing buddies. Anglers like the easy access to the state’s top tailwaters and with stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains the property appeals to just about anyone enjoying a scenic getaway. There are opportunities to enjoy a variety of other outdoor adventures, including hiking scenic sections of the Appalachian Trail.

The cabins are charming and cozy, offering an escape to East Tennessee’s great outdoors. The location is ideal for families, corporate groups and couples. Tailwaters Lodge also boasts 540 feet of private river frontage with additional access to a mile of public TVA property. The South Holston River holds an estimated 8,500 trout per mile.

We determined that the Hatch Cottage, the largest of Tailwaters’ 11 cottages would suit our angling group perfectly. The Hatch has six bedrooms, with 12 beds that will accommodate any group of anglers comfortably. There is a newly refurbished communal room on the lower level, with a separate catering kitchen area and multiple tables for dining, fly tying or just gathering. The primary kitchen and living area are located one floor up on the main level. Both kitchens are fully equipped with coffee makers and filters, cooking utensils, dishwashers, stoves, microwaves, ovens, toasters and spices. Owners Bruce and Paula Cotes also are happy to arrange delicious catered meals for your group from nearby Hickory Tree Grocery.

The 3,500 square foot lodge is spacious enough for friends and family seeking adventure. The main attraction is that it is just steps away to the South Holston River. Hikers will enjoy a walk on nearby river trails. And Bristol Speedway is just 15 miles away. A firepit outside, complete with two milkcrates of seasoned firewood, is a gathering place to share fishing adventures at the end of the day. A 16-foot by 25-foot deck also provides an area to hang waders or just relaxing. A propane grill, washer and dryer, vacuum cleaner and free Wifi are also included.

Rates vary by season, so January was an especially affordable time to visit, though temperatures were quite chilly. Paula and Bruce are also happy to set up your guided fishing trips with South Holston River Company. For complete details, click here to visit their website. .
