There is a big problem when it comes to me and tenkara. It stems from me being so focused on tenkara as my chosen fly-fishing style. When other people are fishing with me, my obsession can pique their interest. That interest can turn into wanting to try it out. As I am so well versed in the subject, they may expect or desire assistance in the form of tips or tricks. Despite the maternal side of my family’s long history of instructional careers, I’m no teacher.

I know exactly what I am trying to convey at any moment. I have my mind set to precisely explain any process I use for any situation. However, it doesn’t often traverse the path from my brain to a set of ears very well. Any instructions I give make perfect sense to me, and your understanding of them is not my problem. Maybe sometimes it is best to rely on others.

There are all manner of blogs, videos, websites, and books full of tips and demonstrations. Which one is best? I am partial to the new book Tenkara 101 by Steve Hudson. If you are curious about tenkara, his book is a great place to start. There is plenty of good information for any level of fisherman. I have learned a few things while reading through it.

Many subjects covered in Tenkara 101 have not even come to my mind while trying to teach. I never considered showing any grip technique other than my own. I also didn’t take into account rod flex ratings and what others might prefer. All such things and more are covered in this book. You will find suggestions for gear, options for connecting lines, and explanations for all the numbers and ratings. It has certainly become my go to manual for anyone showing interest in the wild world of tenkara.

Copies of Tenkara 101 are available on Steve Hudson’s website.
