Eating at Rhinehart’s Oyster Bar is always at the top of my must-do list when visiting Augusta to fish the shoals on the Savannah River. Whether this well-known establishment was initially introduced to me through family or friends, I don’t remember, but I am grateful it was. It is a casual, comfortable, come-as-you-are place that serves delicious dishes, and especially fresh raw oysters. I always enjoy a great meal with an attentive staff, whether it’s celebrating a special occasion, telling fish stories for ending after a day on the water or simply enjoying the camaraderie of good friends or family.

Rhinehart’s has been an institution in Augusta for more than four decades. Craig and Amy Bailey opened the eatery in 1983 and named it after their Aunt Nancy’s maiden name. The business began with only a small refrigerator and their Aunt Nancy’s toaster oven.
Today the large parking lot is still unpaved but almost always full of cars. From the beginning, the owners referred to the restaurant as “Beyond Casual” while continually learning and trying new things. Ultimately, they came to the conclusion: “You don’t have to wear a tie or pantyhose to eat oysters, ice-cold beer makes the world a friendlier place, people won’t get nervous if your restaurant looks like a broken down beach shack, you don’t get dishpan hands if you use paper plates, and if most everything on your menu is under $10.00, men will bring their wives.”

On their menu, Rhinehart’s offers snacks, sandwiches, seafood, chicken and a selection for kids. Appetizers available include fried pickles, grilled garlic bread, mahi mahi bites, cheesy toasted catfish chowder, and much more. Various mouth-watering party trays are also available to-go and for larger parties. Of course, raw oysters are their mainstay! They have daily lunch and dinner specials that include shrimp baskets with fries, bayou shrimp and grits, Parmesan shrimp pasta and more. Beer and daily drink specials are also offered.

Rhinehart’s Oyster Bar is a place you will return to time and time again, as I have over the years. You won’t regret giving Rhinehart’s a try and determine for yourself why the slogan “Beyond Casual Seafood” is a term that is instilled in their legacy and reputation.
