In our regular saltwater feature in this edition, we talk about visiting Belize River Lodge near that country’s capital city. Their facilities and hospitality are excellent for hosting fly-casting anglers. But they also have another even more exotic option to offer visiting fly fishers.
Roughly 15 miles to the northeast as the gulls fly, they operate Long Caye Outpost Lodge on its namesake isle. This private camp located on the edge of Belize’s Barrier Reef provides the same hospitality, service and tasty cuisine as the main lodge, while also adding idyllic scenery.

The Long Caye Outpost Lodge.
Reached only by boat, the Outpost provides the perfect getaway for fishermen, while also offering beach, watersport and eco-tour possibilities for the non-anglers in the group. Among those activities are snorkeling, manatee watching or taking the 10-minute boat ride to the village on Caye Caulker for some exploring and souvenir shopping.
For anglers, the Outpost is situated in the midst of some of the finest fishing in the Caribbean. Tarpon, snook, bonefish and permit are all available, offering the chance to shoot for a “Super Slam” of all four species in a day. Just 20 minutes away by boat lies the Long Caye Channel and the pure white sand flats of the region known as Miami Beach. Both of those are noted for producing some very big tarpon.
The Belize River Lodge guides are available to put anglers on fish throughout this area. Those charters can be for the full day, including a sack lunch, or split days. That second option starts with early morning action, a return to the outpost for a lunch and nap, then late afternoon fishing. In either case you end the day enjoying a palette of sunset colors from over the Caribbean Sea, while enjoying pre-dinner appetizers.
Even more convenient is the hard sand flat just off the Outpost’s beach. Wade fishing is possible there for both bonefish and permit.
Meals are served at the Outpost daily with the staff from the main lodge providing cooking. The fare is Belizean Creole, mirroring the regional cuisine. They also are happy to accommodate any special dietary needs during a visit.
The Outpost features three double-occupancy bedrooms with twin beds and a shared bath with hot and cold water. Ceiling fans are in each room and power is supplied by a generator during visits.
The Long Caye Outpost Lodge has a capacity of six guests. Packages are offered for parties of two, four or six individuals. For complete details, click here to visit the Belize River Lodge website, then open the link for the LC Outpost.
