Superfly Composites new Gen4 mats are designed for fly anglers, whether fishing from a skiff or a larger vessel. The line management mats with removable spikes are available in two sizes. The large mat is 30-by-30-by-30-inches and the smaller version is 20-by-20-by-20-inches. The smaller mats are ideal for SUPs and Gheenoes.

What is different about the newly introduced Gen4? Gen4 mats and the spikes undergo a post-production process that creates a silky-smooth surface, rather than the tackier version that silicon mats often offer. The finish is baked into the silicon. This results in reduced friction with less line drag. Superfly Composites also adjusted the production of their mats from a casting technique to precision injection molding, which offers exceptional detail with added durability. As a result, the mats are smoother, tougher and more refined.

The mats are soft under bare feet. They are resistant to saltwater and UV exposure. They are built to last, whether folded, rolled or stuffed into storage compartments. They will not lose their shape and will always lay flat when ready to use.

Each mat has 24 removable spikes, in either 1.5-inch or 3-inch heights allowing for the configuration that is desired for position and casting conditions. The mats can be custom designed and are available in four colors of mats and spikes. A 10-liter dry bag is also included for easy storage.

Superfly Composites is a relatively new company created by father and son team Mark and Mason Tochtenhagen, based in Naples, Florida. They decided to design their own fly line mats and deck spikes for their own use, since they weren’t satisfied by what they found offered on the market. They experimented with the design of different prototypes and by casting various materials until they came up with a design and product that worked. Today they have their products selling internationally, stocked on shelves in fly shops and used by guides and outfitters in serving their clients.

Gen4 mats are made for being on the water every day and meet a guide’s tough standards. Suprfly Composites’ fly line management gear helps to eliminate tangled lines and coils. In addition to stripping mats, they also design and produce deck spikes. Their website also offers tips for installing grommets and deck spikes. Click here for more information.
