If you are interested in tackling the big, educated trout of West Virginia’s Elk River, the Elk Springs Resort & Fly Shop is a great option. Situated on the banks of the river in Monterville in Pocahontas County, the facility offers everything needed for a great fishing trip to an outstanding destination.

The resort offers four family cabins, six primitive cabins, four studio units and a 6000-square-foot lodge. They can host a family group, single angler or even corporate group. Also onsite are a gift shop and, although temporarily closed, Ellie May’s Old Mill Restaurant. Above all, you can expect good old-fashion mountain hospitality from owners Daron and Lisa Dean.

The resort sits on the water just downstream of where the river reemerges from having run for a couple of miles underground. The large pool behind the fly shop is a hotspot for catch-and-release fly fishing only for resort guests.

The fly shop also offers guided trips on the river for trophy-sized rainbow and brown trout. Or, if your preference is for a backcountry trip for brook trout, their experienced guide staff also can accommodate you. Private and group lessons, as well as schools are offered for beginning and advanced fly fishers.

For the novice angler and youngsters wanting to get a feel for the sport, there is fly and spin fishing in two stocked ponds on the property as well. These waters are loaded with one- to 9-pound rainbow trout.

The onsite fly shop is the largest in West Virginia offering full lines of name brand and close out gear. They also have more than 800 fly patterns to chose from, while providing tips on water conditions, hatches and gear.

More recently, the resort has also added guided hunting trips for whitetail deer and turkeys to their offerings.

A few of the things you won’t find at Elk Springs are cell service and dependable Wifi. This is a destination for getting away from work and other distractions. Also, be sure to get a fishing license before arriving or purchasing one online. The nearest vender selling them is 45 miles away in the town Elkins!
